Why the atmosphere became oxygenated: A proposal

چکیده

The increase in the oxidation state of the atmosphere during Earth history is well documented, but not the reasons for this process. The course of atmospheric evolution has been dominated by the effects of photosynthesis and by the composition of volcanic gases. The H2/H2O ratio of volcanic gases has remained essentially constant during most of Earth history. It is here proposed that their CO2/H2O and SO2/H2O ratios have increased with time. A simple model for the degassing and the recycling of CO2, SO2, and H2O can account for many of the major steps in the oxygenation of the atmosphere. 2009 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Two-step rise of atmospheric oxygen linked to the growth of continents

1 Oxygen is a major element in all of the terrestrial planets in our Solar System. Yet, no planet besides Earth has an oxygenated atmosphere because oxygen is locked away as oxides in the rocky interiors of planets. Detrital uraninite and pyrite minerals, as well as mass-independent sulfur isotope fractionation, indicate that Earth’s atmosphere was also initially free of O2 (refs 1,2). Around 2...

The oxygenation of the atmosphere and oceans.

The last 3.85 Gyr of Earth history have been divided into five stages. During stage 1 (3.85-2.45 Gyr ago (Ga)) the atmosphere was largely or entirely anoxic, as were the oceans, with the possible exception of oxygen oases in the shallow oceans. During stage 2 (2.45-1.85 Ga) atmospheric oxygen levels rose to values estimated to have been between 0.02 and 0.04 atm. The shallow oceans became mildl...

When did oxygenic photosynthesis evolve?

The atmosphere has apparently been oxygenated since the 'Great Oxidation Event' ca 2.4 Ga ago, but when the photosynthetic oxygen production began is debatable. However, geological and geochemical evidence from older sedimentary rocks indicates that oxygenic photosynthesis evolved well before this oxygenation event. Fluid-inclusion oils in ca 2.45 Ga sandstones contain hydrocarbon biomarkers ev...

Oxygen dynamics in the aftermath of the Great Oxidation of Earth's atmosphere.

The oxygen content of Earth's atmosphere has varied greatly through time, progressing from exceptionally low levels before about 2.3 billion years ago, to much higher levels afterward. In the absence of better information, we usually view the progress in Earth's oxygenation as a series of steps followed by periods of relative stasis. In contrast to this view, and as reported here, a dynamic evo...
